Another great race for Sam at Hickory

Sam Watts Racing

This past weekend was set to be probably the biggest race of Sam’s career so far. It was definitely the longest. Sam flew up to Hickory North Carolina Thursday and had a good practice on Friday. The cars were then parked until Qualifying on Saturday afternoon, when Sam qualified 10th out of 33 cars. The cars were parked again until the race on Sunday.

With the autograph session out of the way, everyone was ready to start racing. Sam started 5th row outside and immediately settled down into single file racing in 7th place. “I was just riding my car and not wearing out my equipment,” He said. Yet again he was playing the patient game and avoiding all of the wrecks.

There was a scheduled pit stop half way through the race at lap 125. Sam came down pit row and the team replaced the 2 right side tires, filled the car with gas, and made some adjustments.

Sam stayed in 7th on the restart, keeping patient and staying out of trouble. He stayed in the top 10 for the entire race and at one point was in 4th place. He took the checkered flag in 6th, with the car in one piece and a very happy Sam and crew.

Sam ran the high groove for most of the race, and for the last 30 laps he had a car on the inside of him. “The high groove was working for me and I was comfortable running up there,” he explained. After the race, an exhausted Sam said, “That was tough, very challenging, but a lot of fun!” This was by far the biggest race he had run, and he can’t wait for the next time. “I had a great team in Lee and Michael Faulk, and a great race car. I want to thank them both for their hard work and effort in making my time in NC so much fun.”

Sam will be back at New Smyrna speedway in the Sunbelt 125 super late model race on Sat Oct 27th, and then the team is looking forward to Sam running his first ever Governors Cup in November. Come out and cheer Sam on next weekend!
