This past weekend at Bronson was anticipated to be interesting after the last race there. Kevin Williams served as stand-in crew chief, and everything started out well. Sam put down the 2nd fastest time behind Keene. Keene drew a 0, which put Sam on outside pole. This is not where Sam would of preferred to start since Bronson is such a small and tight track.
Just after the drop of the green flag Keene got a bit loose and washed up into Sam, causing Sam to tap the wall on lap one. Sam finally got down to single file racing, settling into 5th. He patiently worked his way up to 3rd behind Moff and remained there for the better part of the race. One of Moff’s tires started to go flat, allowing Sam to take over the 2nd spot behind Keene. Sam tried to conserve his car for the last ten laps, but as the caution came out on lap 87, he felt a vibration. He had just reported it to his crew chief when suddenly he spun out on the backstretch, his right rear tire shooting across the track and settling in the infield. Sam got out of his car, fortunately unscathed, but less could be said for the racecar. The right rear wheel sheared off the hub, sending it upwards destroying the rear of the car. 4 of the lugs with parts of the hub were still in the wheel.
Sam was very disappointed. He knew he had a great car and would have settled for 2nd if not a win. Luckily, he was not injured and the racecar can be repaired. He and stand-in crew chief Kevin had a great time and Kevin did a great job working with Sam. Watch out for Sam in his next race, where hopefully he will get the break that he rightly deserves. This is Sam’s first DNF this season, and hopefully his last. His dad was very upset, but unfortunately nobody can foresee these things happening, and gladly Sam was not injured. Sam’s next race is Desoto on May 27th. Come cheer him on!
