The day started out good. the VCR
team tested on Thursday night and all went well, so
Sam just needed to go out to scrub in the tires. Sam
qualified in 6th position, Jason Boyd got fastest time
and then pulled a #7 so the field got inverted from
7 up. This put Sam on outside pole next to the car 1x
of Chuck Burkhalter.
From the drop of the green flag, Sam
was slightly ahead of 1x, but they stayed side by side
for 2 laps. Chuck tried to lean on Sam as he came out
of turn 4, but Sam was ready for him, suspecting that
Chuck would try this tactic and push him up into the
wall. Sam just leaned on the 1x, putting tire scuffs
down the side of the 73 car but allowing Sam to pull
away from burkhalter. The field behind him was now battling
for positions as Sam lead the way.
The 26 of Russell caused Artuso #5
to spin out, putting both cars to the rear of the
field
and leaving Jason Boyd on sams tail. Boyd tried many
ways to get around Sam, but Sam held strong and as
the
white flag came out for the last lap, Boyd spun out.
There was then a green-white-checkered
finish standing in the way of Sam taking his first
Good year series win.
Sam managed to hold off a last attempt
by Clouser #9 to rob him of his first win, but Sam managed
to hold on and get to the checkered flag first. This
was by far the biggest night of young Sam's career.
He achieved quite a bit on Saturday night. He managed
to lead every lap of the 100 lap event and claimed his
first Good year win. Everyone on the VCR team was very
proud of how Sam performed This win places Sam back
up into 2nd place points.
Watch out for Sam this weekend at
Columbia Motor Speedway, with only 4 races left who
knows what will happen next!!!
