Sam was crowned rookie of the year
this past Friday night even though the events of the
night weren’t
how the VCR team had hoped for the season to end.
It
was a cool night and qualifying got off to a good start.
Sam went out first and set the pace, managing
to hold 3rd fastest by the end of qualifying, with
#2 of Currelli pole sitting, and #01 of Jason Boyd
in 2nd.
By lap 9, Jason had the lead and
Sam passed Currelli for the 2nd spot. Sam and Tim Russell
were
now 2nd
and 3rd respectively, both gaining ground on Boyd.
Then a caution came out, and both Sam and Russell spun
out on the backstretch trying to avoid the spun car.
Both were able to get their spots back. The race stayed
green and on lap 54 Russell got by Sam on the outside,
knocking Sam back to 3rd. Sam was told by his crew
chief to lay back a bit and let the leaders race it
out, and wait for one them to make a mistake. The leaders
were battling and on lap 88 as Russell tried to go
under Boyd the two cars got together, causing Boyd
to spin. Sam, with having nowhere to go, ended up in
the side of Jason Boyd’s car. Sam came into the
pits for some repair and was sent back onto the track
for a short time as the car then overheated, ending
Sam’s race early with yet another DNF. Sam finished
the race in 9th place, and finished his first Goodyear
series as Rookie of the Year and also 6th place in
points.
